Conde Nast Traveller list of ‘The most beautiful castles in Europe’
It was a lazy Sunday in November, we left Zagreb and hit the highway to the north to visit Trakošćan castle. The scenery on the way was colourful, but nothing compared to what was waiting for us upon arrival.
Let me just say: Autumn colours and architecture at its finest.
Here are 3 main things I experienced in Trakošćan, and I recommend you should too, in the same order, you’ll see why. But before that, let me tell you a few words about Trakošćan castle.
So, Trakošćan castle dates back in the 14th century, it was built as a small fortress. For almost 400 years the castle was the property of Croatian aristocratic Drašković family. In the 19th century, Drašković family renovated the castle in Romantic style and turned it into their residence. Today Trakošćan is transformed into a museum, which is protected as a cultural heritage of Republic of Croatia.
From the stone fortresses of the Scottish highlands and the storybook lookalikes of Germany, Trakošćan castle in Croatia is worth every visit. Conde Nast Traveller, one of the most well-respected travel publications placed Croatia’s beautiful Trakošćan castle at number 11, on the list of ‘The most beautiful castles in Europe’.
Trakošćan highlight No 1 – Forest park and lake
There’s a big lake next to the castle, built artificially as a decoration, which totally adds to a fairy-tale landscape.
I took a nice 1,5 hour walk around the tree lined lake and I absolutely loved it! It’s a calming walk filled with beautiful panoramas and rich vegetation. It’s a true relaxation, just to enjoy the smells, the piece and quiet and to observe the colours of untouched nature in the autumn.

Trakošćan highlight No 2 – A break by the lake
If you’re anything like me, you love taking breaks for coffee or tea!
So after 90 minutes of easy and slow walk, I took a break having coffee in a nice floating restaurant on the like. It was a perfect spot to reflect on the sceneries I just enjoyed over a cup of warm drink.
I was now ready and excited to visit the castle, the grand gothic fortress set on a hill.
Trakošćan highlight No 3 – The castle
You know what they say, save the best for last! So I did!
I wasn’t allowed to take pictures in the castle, but it’s better, you should come experience it by yourself.
Let me just tell you, I’ve seen many castles in Europe, including the most famous Neuschwanstein in Germany, and Trakošćan has a well deserved spot on list of ‘The most beautiful castles in Europe’.
Here’s why: The castle is impeccably preserved from the outside and inside. It’s a true fairy tale setting sculpted from yellow stone with white trimmed crenelations and red roof towers. I almost felt like a princess!
And inside I saw a valuable collection of paintings, furniture and a vast collection of firearms and weaponry.
